French
Subject Vision
We believe that the learning of a foreign language provides a valuable educational, social and cultural experience for pupils. Pupils develop communication and oracy skills that lay the foundation for future language learning. They develop linguistic competence, extend their knowledge of how language works and explore differences and similarities between French and English. Learning another language raises awareness of our multi-lingual and multi-cultural world.
Implementation
French is taught following the Kapow scheme of work. Our MFL curriculum has been designed to progressively develop skills in French. The curriculum ensures that children acquire a bank of vocabulary organised around topics. It also ensures that the development is progressive as they build on previous knowledge from units already studied. All children in KS2 are taught French in weekly lessons, delivered by the class teacher. Our children learn through active participation in actions, rhymes, stories, song, grammar focus, video clips, sentence structure, dictionary work and many more creative ways to embed and combine language skills.
Intent
We aim to enable our children to:
- Develop an interest in and thirst for learning other languages
- Introduce the learning of the French language and the understanding of its culture in enjoyable and stimulating ways
- Embed the essential skills of listening, reading, speaking and writing
- Build the children’s ‘culture capital’ so that they are aware of similarities and differences between cultures
- Enable children to use and apply their French learning in a variety of contexts
Impact
Our children will:
- Become confident to engage in simple conversations
- Have an awareness of the vocabulary and language needed in a variety of situations.
- An understanding of simple French language, which will form the basis of future work to be undertaken in Key Stage 3.
- An awareness of intercultural understanding with respect to languages represented at Earl Spencer Primary
- Gain a clear insight into similarities and differences between themselves and those of French speaking children.
