Subject Vision

At Earl Spencer Primary School, we believe that Design and Technology gives children the opportunity to nurture creativity and innovation through design.  They will develop skills, knowledge and understanding of designing and making functional products.  Using creativity and imagination, pupils will design and make products that solve real and relevant problems, within a variety of contexts, considering their own and others’ needs, wants and values. At Earl Spencer Primary School, children are taught to select and use appropriate tools safely and effectively to make a product. In all areas of Design and Technology, the children are encouraged to consider the effectiveness of their designs and requirements of the product thereby enabling them to become evaluative learners.

Intent

At Earl Spencer Primary School we intend to build a Design Technology curriculum which aims to give all children the opportunity to reflect on what they have learned through their practical exploration and then to use this knowledge to design and make their own product. We aim to encourage children to take risks, to develop new innovative designs and to be reflective learners by giving them opportunities to evaluate their own work, as well as the design and work of others within school and the wider world.

Implementation

Design and technology is taught as part of a termly topic, focusing on knowledge and skills stated in the National Curriculum.  Teachers plan lessons for their class using Curriculum Maestro ensuring cross-curricular links between subjects.  Children are given the opportunity to engage in a wide range of D&T activities, which include construction, textiles and food/drink. This actively encourage students to embrace the subject and develop a lifelong set of skills.

Impact

Children will have clear enjoyment and confidence in design and technology that they will then apply to other areas of the curriculum. Children learn to be passionate and excited by the designing and making of products including working with, preparing and tasting food. Learning is assessed through the analysis of the pupils’ ability to evaluate, design, make and improve their own work.
