Art
Subject Vision
The art curriculum at Earl Spencer Primary School is inclusive. It gives opportunities to celebrate talents, share skills, build resilience and learn collaboratively, creatively and responsibly. The cross-curricular nature of the art curriculum helps develop an appreciation of the wider world and its culture, music, design, artists, designers, craftspeople, film makers, writers and architects – and we celebrate this.
Intent
The aims of our Art curriculum are to ensure that art and design is being taught by the whole school and that progression is tracked across the school. We want children to be able to use a range of tools and resources to create a variety of artwork. We want our children to be able to use subject specific vocabulary related to art and design and to develop cultural links related to art. They will create a portfolio in sketchbooks which demonstrates their progression of skills as they move through the school. At the end of each project we want pupils to be able to use artistic vocabulary to talk about their likes and dislikes of their own and other people's artwork, providing constructive feedback.
Implementation
Art lessons are taught weekly as part of our curriculum. Following the Cornerstones framework, we deliver an Art curriculum that ensures that children's knowledge is build upon as they move up the school. Sketchbooks will clearly evidence the variety of skills being used by pupil. Teachers will model techniques and use the appropriate subject specific vocabulary throughout the lessons. A knowledge of famous artists, their work and their techniques and style will be gained through well-planned and appropriately resourced lessons. Children will be able to discuss art and artists using the appropriate vocabulary. Cultural links will be developed by studying art and artists from around the world.
Impact
At Earl Spencer Art and Design will be recorded in different ways and this will be displayed in the children's individual sketchbooks. This could be as photographs for practical activities or
physical artwork in sketchbooks. Our curriculum will enable pupils to explore their imagination, generate ideas and acquire new skills. It will also provide them with an outlet to express themselves by exploring different media and mediums. Feedback and marking is followed as per the school's broader curriculum subject marking policy. Teachers will assess progress at the end of each term.
