PE Curriculum
Intent:

At Earl Spencer Primary School, our vision for Physical Education is to create a curriculum that is aspirational, inclusive, and creative. Our curriculum is designed to teach children how to live a healthy and active lifestyle, helping them understand the importance of well-being and participation. We aim to provide opportunities for students to build physical confidence in ways that support their overall health and fitness. By exposing them to a variety of sports, we encourage continual growth in their understanding of rules, strategies, and tactics. Our curriculum also focusses on highlighting the positive impact of sports on both physical and mental health, boosting self-esteem, and inspiring children to enjoy and succeed in a wide range of activities, including gymnastics, dance, games, and both competitive and non-competitive sports. Through these activities, students develop their fundamental movement and gross motor skills. Additionally, we offer ambitious opportunities for competition in sports and other activities to help build character, encourage core values such as fairness, sportsmanship, and respect.

Implementation:

At Earl Spencer Primary School, every child receives at least two hours of PE each week, with additional opportunities for physical activity during break and lunch times, supported by our PE teachers and young leaders. These activities aim to encourage a love for PE and sport. Our PE curriculum scheme (PE Planning) offers a challenging and enjoyable learning experience through a variety of sporting activities, including invasion games, net and wall games, strike and field games, gymnastics, dance, outdoor and adventure activities, and swimming. By the time children leave Key Stage 2, they will have had the opportunity to attend swimming lessons and swim a distance of 25 meters.

Impact:

At Earl Spencer Primary School, we ensure that our PE curriculum is inclusive, progressive, and provides all children with the opportunity to acquire and develop fundamental knowledge, skills, and techniques across a wide variety of sports and activities. Our PE lessons are designed to be fun, enjoyable, and challenging, allowing each child to achieve their best in a supportive, safe, and stimulating environment. Regular physical activity has a positive impact on classroom learning, and children understand the importance of exercise for both their physical and mental well-being. By the time they leave, our pupils will have made significant progress in their fundamental movement skills, gained experience in applying these skills in various situations, and developed the ability to challenge themselves to achieve their personal best. They will also have learnt to work cooperatively as part of a team, assess and improve performance, and appreciate the role of physical activity in leading a healthy lifestyle. We aspire for all children to develop a love for PE and sport that extends beyond their time at school, with opportunities to participate in after-school sports and represent the school at local sporting events.

We also measure impact using:

  • PE Planning assessments
  • Regular teacher assessment within lessons
  • Observation of application and development of physical skills
  • Self and peer assessment opportunities
  • Pupil voice
  • Termly assessments
